Images of Pi

Since the Ancient World the circle has been the subject of mathematical investigation. The geometry of the circle has given rise to a huge number of theorems, many of which I proved at school.  Geometric proofs of circle theorems was, in fact, my introduction to the wonders of mathematics. For me, one of the most intriguing concepts of mathematics, relates to the circle:- if you take a circular object of any size and use a string to measure the distance around it (the circumference) and divide this number by the distance across the circle, passing through the centre, (the diameter), you always get the same number. So, in an ever-changing world, there is something that is constant, to which we give the Greek letter Pi (π).
